USB-C is the emerging standard for charging and transferring data. Right now, it’s included in devices like the newest laptops, phones, and tablets and—given time—it’ll spread to pretty much everything that currently uses the older, larger USB connector.

USB-C is closely intertwined with other new standards, as well—like USB 3.1 for faster speeds and USB Power Delivery for improved power-delivery over USB connections.. The USB-C connector itself can support various exciting new USB standard like USB 3.1 and USB power delivery (USB PD).. The standard USB connector you’re most familiar with is USB Type-A.. Even as we’ve moved from USB 1 to USB 2 and on to modern USB 3 devices, that connector has stayed the same.. It’s a single USB connector shape that all devices should adopt, so you won’t have to keep loads of different USB cables with different connector shapes for your various devices.. USB Type-C ports can also support a variety of different protocols using “alternate modes,” which allows you to have adapters that can output HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, or other types of connections from that single USB port.. Apple’s USB-C Digital Multiport Adapter is a good example of this, offering an adapter that allows you to connect an HDMI, VGA, larger USB Type-A connectors, and smaller USB Type-C connector via a single port.. USB 3.1 is a new USB standard.. USB Type-C is just a connector shape, and the underlying technology could just be USB 2 or USB 3.0.. In fact, Nokia’s N1 Android tablet uses a USB Type-C connector, but underneath it’s all USB 2.0—not even USB 3.0.. You can’t plug older USB devices into a modern, tiny USB-C port, nor can you connect a USB-C connector into an older, larger USB port.. USB 3.1 is still backwards-compatible with older versions of USB, so you just need a physical adapter with a USB-C connector on one end and a larger, older-style USB port on the other end.

We review the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti for gamers who wondered how the Turing architecture would perform if Nvidia stripped out its Tensor and RT cores.

11/21/2019 Update: Since the launch of the GTX 1660 Ti in February 2019, the GPU landscape has changed dramatically, with a swath of "Super" cards based on the same Turing architecture, but pushing both higher performance and lower prices than the company's initial Turing lineup.. Most relevant to potential buyers of the GTX 1660 Ti is the GeForce GTX 1660 Super , which delivers similar performance to the 1660 Ti, at a lower starting price of $229.. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is built on TU116—an all-new graphics processor that incorporates Turing’s improved shaders, its unified cache architecture, support for adaptive shading, and a full complement of video encode/decode acceleration features.. EVGA's take on the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Nvidia says that GeForce GTX 1660 Ti will start at $280 and completely replace GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.. GeForce RTX 2060 is equipped with 44 percent of the 2080 Ti’s CUDA cores and texture units, 54 percent of its ROPs and memory bandwidth, and 50 percent of its L2 cache.. Like the higher-end GeForce RTX 20-series cards, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti supports simultaneous execution of FP32 arithmetic instructions, which constitute most shader workloads, and INT32 operations (for addressing/fetching data, floating-point min/max, compare, etc.).. In TU116 specifically, Nvidia says it replaces Turing’s Tensor cores with 128 dedicated FP16 cores per SM, which allow GeForce GTX 1660 Ti to process half-precision operations at 2x the rate of FP32.. Our EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Black Gaming sample topped out around 1,845 MHz through three runs of Metro: Last Light , while other cards we’ve seen readily exceed 2,000 MHz.. That’s 50% more memory bandwidth than GeForce GTX 1060 gets, helping GeForce GTX 1660 Ti maintain its performance advantage at 2560 x 1440 with anti-aliasing enabled.. Despite a larger die, a 50%-higher transistor count, and a more aggressive GPU Boost clock rate, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is rated for the same 120W as GeForce GTX 1060.. More interesting than the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Black Gaming’s fairly simple power supply, perhaps, is the fact that EVGA’s PCB has vacant pads for an additional two GPU phases.

DisplayPort can be found on laptops, graphics cards, and monitors, but just what is DisplayPort? And how does DisplayPort work? Read on to find out.

Whereas connectors like HDMI are commonly found on mainstream games consoles, televisions, monitors, and graphics cards, DisplayPort is more common in high-end devices.. You'll find DisplayPort connectors on high-end PC graphics cards, on certain laptops, and on a number of capable monitors that support higher resolutions and refresh rates.. An easy way to understand how this is works is that although USB-C & Thunderbolt 3 use a different connector than DisplayPort, DisplayPort’s underlying technology, or protocol, is used to send the video information through those ports.. Although it is becoming more commonplace as the technology evolves, DisplayPort is more typically found in higher-end devices that require the kind of bandwidth and feature support it offers over more mainstream technologies like HDMI.. Gamers don't necessarily have to use that port, but unless their monitor or TV also supports the newest HDMI 2.1 standard, DisplayPort is effectively mandatory, as the only technology that supports both high resolutions and high refresh rates simultaneously (more on that below).. Where common HDMI connections like the 2.0 standard can support up to 5K resolution at 30 Hz, and 4K resolution at 60Hz, DisplayPort 1.4 can support double the refresh rates at the same resolution and supports 8K resolution at up to 30Hz.. The latest generation of the technology, DisplayPort 2.0, ups the ante even further, supporting up to 16K resolution and up to twin 8K displays at high refresh rates.. You’ll find DisplayPort adapters to connect to HDMI, DVI, VGA, and Mini DisplayPort monitors.. When we discuss Hz or Hertz, in relation to DisplayPort, what we're really referring to is the kind of monitor refresh rates that DisplayPort supports.. But when it comes to your particular hardware, how many Hz does DisplayPort support, really depends on how many monitors you're running, what resolution they're set to, and what version of DisplayPort connector you're running them off of.. DisplayPort 1.4 is the most common found on mainstream gaming monitors and graphics cards.. It supports the same refresh rates and resolutions as DisplayPort 1.3 (without compression), and can handle 4K at up to 120Hz, two 4K displays at 60Hz, and up to four displays at 2,560 x 1,600 at 60Hz.. The DisplayPort 2.0 standard was only announced by its governing body, VESA , in mid-2019, but when supporting monitors, laptops, and graphics cards start to appear, they will offer higher refresh rates and resolutions than anything else out there.. But even as that competing cable standard evolves, DisplayPort is still leaps and bounds ahead in both resolution and refresh rate support, as well as features.. Cable Matters carries a large array of high-end DisplayPort 1.4 cables – from standard passive cables, to more advanced active cables designed for reliability across longer lengths.
